Am Gaumen sehr kraftvoll und mit viel süßem Schmelz ausgestattet, dunkelbeerige Frucht, dazu etwas Lakritze im Nachhall, sehr lange anhaltend. Robert Parker vergibt 96 Punkte: The Fattoria le Pupille 2018 Saffredi borrows quite a bit from all of the grapes that make up the blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot). These balanced results open to a round bouquet of dark fruit, black cherry and plum. As the wine warms in the glass, it shows spice, cured tobacco and campfire embers. This is a full-bodied expression, but not excessively so. It puts forth immediate elegance with carefully measured tannins and a fitting postscript of fresh acidity. This newest vintage of Saffredi should be hitting the market now, but if you buy it, you should plan on cellaring it. James Suckling vergibt 97 Punkte: A fantastic nose to this with currant, sage, rosemary and rose-petal character. Sweet tobacco and spicy chocolate, too. Very complex. The palate shows lovely depth of fruit with blackberries, blackcurrants and fine tannins. It’s racy and refined with a direct, focused palate. Just a baby. A blend of cabernet sauvignon 60%, merlot 32% and petite verdot 8%. This needs at least two or three years to soften. Try in 2023. Antonio Galloni vergibt 96+ Punkte: The 2018 Saffredi is a regal, elegant, supremely polished wine. It may very well be the most refined Saffredi I have ever tasted. Silky in its first impression, with striking aromatic presence and exceptional balance, the 2018 is a total knock-out. Sweet red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and cinnamon accents develop over time, but it is the wine’s overall balance and poise that are so impressive today. The 2018 is an absolutely gorgeous Saffredi. It spent 20 months in French oak barrels, about 65% new. Don’t miss it. Die für die Maremma-Böden so typische Mineralität ist in dem unglaublich langem Finale omnipräsent. Der Jahrgang 2017 war in der südlichen Toskana von den klimatischen Verhältnissen her ideal für Cabernet Franc. Und darüber sind sich auch die internationalen Weinkritiker einig und vergeben Höchstbewertungen am laufendem Band. Of these three top-tier releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. This is an upright and direct expression of the grape that carefully sheds some dusty or mineral aromas before opening the way for determined black fruit, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. There is quite a bit of oak, but it works beautifully against the natural intensity and rich concentration of the hot vintage. More unexpected are those pretty tones of lilac, blue flower and aniseed that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart. This 2019 expression boasts a very compact and powerful quality of fruit with deep intensity, thick layering and a velvety texture. The Le Macchiole 2018 Paleo has a spicy and tangy personality with dark fruit, bitter chocolate and tarry smoke. Coming back to my open bottle 24 hours later, I got some green olive and rosemary essence. The mouthfeel fleshes out considerably, and there is beautiful structure to hold it firmly together. Other vintners in Bolgheri have told me of their difficulties with Cabernet Franc in the 2018 vintage, which saw rain toward the end of the season. This wine feels magically immune to those issues and probably means that the expert vineyard team harvested at the right moment. The aromatics are total seduction, but otherwise the 2018 is quite reticent. The 2018 needs at least a few years in bottle to fully blossom. Even so, it is pretty appealing today. Der Falstaff vergibt 99 Punkte und schreibt: Leuchtendes Rubinrot. In der Nase zarte Preiselbeere, etwas Kirsche und edle Würze, hält sich insgesamt zurück. Am Gaumen eng und dicht gewoben, dabei sehr geschliffen, sehr saftig im Verlauf, im Finale sehr lange und druckvoll, endet auf leicht erdigen Noten, wird hervorragend reifen. Robert Parker vergibt 98 Punkte und schreibt: The 2019 Flaccianello della Pieve is another stunning wine that sums up the character of the vintage and reflects the sun-drenched beauty of its quintessentially Tuscan surroundings. Giovanni Manetti and his team have two new important wines in the works, but Flaccianello remains an old love and a wine that hits the highest marks for quality consistency vintage after vintage. I tasted this wine next to the 100-point 2016 vintage for friendly comparison, and perhaps the main difference is that the tannins are finer and more accessible in this bottle. It offers rich concentration and layers of dark fruit that wrap thickly over the senses. Tannin management is an active pursuit. Time in barrique has been reduced over the years in favor of a final six-month resting period in larger oak casks. In fact, the barrel room was recently enlarged to give more room to these bigger vessels. The 2019 vintage recalls the balance of 2001 with the freshness of 2013. However, 2019 is more profound. Die schöne erfrischende Säure macht den Saar Riesling zu einem unverzichtbaren Essensbegleiter zu Fischgerichten, Meeresfrüchten und Krustentieren. Und das bei nur 12 % Alkohol!
